Piping Design Engineer

 Position – Piping Design Engineer

 Position Purpose:  The Piping Designer/Engineer creates and establishes comprehensive designs consistent with good practices, client requirements and conformance to Codes and Standards.  They will need to apply standard Computer Aided Design (CAD) and modeling techniques to generate and interpret drawings in support of assigned projects.   The designer will ensure that all established Galloway design standards and practices are followed.  Responsibilities include CAD and 3D Modeling design of basic equipment layouts and piping routings that are consistent with codes and standards and dairy piping requirements.  The Piping Designer needs to be team oriented and willing to lead maintenance employees and contract pipefitters.

 Decision Making:

In conjunction with the Operations, Maintenance and Engineering Teams this position will execute all directives as set forth by the Cap Ex Project list and coordinate the necessary contractors for respective projects.  

 Primary Job Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible to ensure employees/contractors safety programs are followed and ensure a safe work environment

  • Responsible to ensure all subcontractors are following the Company’s Food Safety Management System and programs

  • Generates design and detail drawings including 3D Models, plans/sections, and isometrics to support Projects

  • Manages and maintains the Project Documentation

  • Serves as Discipline Lead for select single-discipline projects by estimating work hours, developing scope of work, making staffing recommendations and maintaining quality processes

  • Assists in developing design and detailed drawings including 2D and 3D models, piping plans/isometrics and assisting in field work as necessary

  • Estimates maintenance employees and contract pipefitters work hours based on scope of work

  • Interacts with the operations and the scheduling departments to convey project design and identify scope changes

  • Interacts with other departments and suppliers to obtain pertinent information

  • Must have the ability to work with Automation and Process Engineers to support continuous improvement

  • Obtain quotes, write Work Orders and Material Purchase Requests and coordinate work with suppliers, subcontractors and fabrication, maintenance and/or construction firms

  • Walk-down systems per P&ID’s and make any as-built changes to drawings

  • Manage/Support Lock-Out/Tag-Out changes and updates with the safety department

  • Manage hot work permit requirements

  • Manage the annual Back Flow Preventer inspections

  • Support the Safety Department and the Process Safety Management (PSM) efforts to ensure the ammonia system is maintained properly

  • Weekend Coverage – Flexibility in hours – some weekend/holiday work required

    Required Knowledge, Experience and Education: 

  • Associate Degree in technical discipline or equivalent

  • Proficient in standard 2D & 3D Computer Aided Design

  • 2+ years design/drafting experience

  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills

  • Self-motivated and the ability to lead/work in a team environment with industrial construction/field experience

  • Working knowledge of Piping Codes and Standards.  Dairy piping knowledge a benefit

  • Working knowledge of reference documents and guides

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
